The square in front of the church is one of the nicest locations in this historical village. There is the church itself, a cafe, an old fountain, a handful of characteristic houses, some local shops.
It's here that we can find this nice panel, which includes a map of the old Estoi and a text in Portuguese and English, as shown below:
"OLD SETTLEMENT OF ESTOI
In the process of classification
Complex of Buildings of Public Interest
This medieval settlement has Ossónoba Square as its central point, from which compact and irregular urban dwellings sprung up, in contrast to the late 19th century grid-pattern development to the west of the main church square.
In addition to examples of religious architecture - the Church of São Martinho (16th/19th/21st century) and the Chapel of Nossa Senhora do Pé da Cruz (17th century), the late 19th and early 20th century civil architecture stands out. The presence of utilitarian structures - three fountains, a stone sink, a drinking fountain and a tank - bear witness to the importance of water as a decisive factor in its development."
