"El Santuario de Nuestra Señora del Sagrado Corazón en Sliema , Malta fue fundado en 1877 y ha sido una iglesia parroquial desde 1918.
Historia
La iglesia fue construida por iniciativa del P. Paul Vella entre 1877 y 1881, y seis meses después de su finalización, en noviembre de 1881, fue entregada a la Provincia de Malta de los Frailes Menores . El superior provincial en aquel momento era el P. Anton M. Cesal, quien nombró rector al P. Aegidius Portelli.
En 1930, la iglesia se amplió para dar cabida al aumento de población. Fue construida en estilo romano-jónico, con esculturas doradas y pinturas decorativas. La cúpula está decorada con pinturas de diferentes santos franciscanos, y el techo representa episodios alegres de la vida de la Virgen María . El altar tiene cinco pinturas del artista maltés Giuseppe Calì , una de las cuales es su obra maestra que representa a San Jerónimo semidesnudo en la gruta de Belén . La estatua de Nuestra Señora del Sagrado Corazón fue realizada en 1879 por el artista maltés Girolamo Darmanin y llevada a la iglesia el 26 de junio de 1881, día en que la iglesia fue consagrada y abierta al culto.
Durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial, la iglesia sufrió graves daños y el convento franciscano quedó completamente destruido. Un padre franciscano y otras 22 personas murieron sepultados bajo los escombros. Con el paso de los años, la devoción a Nuestra Señora del Sagrado Corazón se extendió rápidamente por toda Malta. Todos los miércoles se celebra una novena perpetua en honor a la Virgen María . La festividad se celebra el primer domingo de julio con servicios litúrgicos, una procesión de la imagen por las calles engalanadas de la parroquia, festividades al aire libre y fuegos artificiales".

During World War II, the church suffered severe damage and the Franciscan convent was completely destroyed. A Franciscan priest and 22 others died buried under the rubble. Over the years, devotion to Our Lady of the Sacred Heart spread rapidly throughout Malta. Every Wednesday, a perpetual novena is celebrated in honor of the Virgin Mary. The feast day is celebrated on the first Sunday of July with liturgical services, a procession of the image through the decorated streets of the parish, outdoor festivities, and fireworks."
