Credits

It is protected in a bombproof room called a casemate. This casemate is equipped with thick cast iron armor, weighing several dozen tons.

The firing port is defended by a shutter operated by an underground mechanism and a 7-ton counterweight. The whole system can be activated in a matter of seconds by four men.

This casemate is named after its inventor, Commander Mougin. Only ten casemates of this type were installed in French forts; the one at Fort de Joux is the only surviving example with a functioning shutter mechanism.
