"This charming square in Badajoz is a sample of the squares and small plazas that dot the city's Old Town. Tradition says it's known as the Plaza de las Tres Mentiras (The Square of the Three Lies), as its official name is Plaza de Cervantes, although the statue that presides over it is not of this figure, but of the great Extremaduran painter Francisco de Zurbarán, and everyone in Badajoz knows it as San Andrés.
This latter name comes from the parish church that, since the 13th century, occupied the space that is now the square.
The square's beautiful paving of black and white cobblestones laid in a star pattern, in the Portuguese style, was completed in 1888, a date printed on the ground at the entrances to the promenade. The central statue is by Aurelio Cabrera and was placed in 1932."
