Article text:
A Southeast Texas city has dedicated a park and bronze statue to the first black world heavyweight boxing champion.
Ceremonies were held Tuesday afternoon in Galveston at Jack Johnson Park.
The Galveston County Daily News reports the statue portrays Johnson wearing boxing gloves and in a fighting stance. Johnson, who was born on the island in 1878, held the world title from 1908 to 1915. He died in 1946 in North Carolina.
Johnson had relationships with white women and racial resentment boiled over in 1910 after he defeated white boxer Jim Jeffries.
Johnson later served time in prison for violating the Mann Act, which made it illegal to transport women across state lines for immoral purposes.
Congressional efforts to win a presidential pardon for Johnson failed in 2011.
