Sacred Heart Saint Francis de Sales Roman Catholic Church is located on Main Street in the town of Bennington, Vermont. The Catholic community in this area began in the 1830s when travelling priests would visit the French and Irish families and celebrate Mass in homes or other makeshift locations.
Saint Francis de Sales parish was established in 1854 and the first stone church was built. By the 1880s the need for a larger church was evident and land was purchased on Main Street. The cornerstone of the new building was laid on July 4, 1889 and the church was consecrated on October 12, 1892. The blue limestone building was designed by George H. Guernsey.
Another Catholic Church, Sacred Heart, was consecrated in Bennington in 1885. This building, located on School Street, was replaced by a new church in 1929.
In 1995, the Most Rev. Kenneth Angell, Bishop of Burlington, merged the two parishes. They are now known as Sacred Heart Saint Francis de Sales Parish and use the Saint Francis de Sales Church building on Main Street. The parish is served by priests of the Congregation of the Holy Cross.
