With a total height of about 700 meters, Mardalsfossen (literally, "the Mara Valley Waterfall") is one of the tallest waterfalls in northern Europe. It is a tiered waterfall with two large drops and several smaller ones.
Mardalsfossen is situated in the Mardøla river (formerly called Mara), close to the village of Eikesdalen and the Eikesdalsvatnet lake. Visitors can follow the Mardalsvegen road from Eikesdalen to a parking lot at N 62° 29.362 E 008° 08.453, then walk southwest to a lookout point at N 62° 28.802 E 008° 07.324. The waterfall is about 1 kilometer south of the lookout point.
For most of the year, the water that would flow down the Mardalsfossen is diverted to the hydroelectric Grytten power plant. Substantial flow down the waterfall is maintained only during the tourist season from 20 June to 20 August.
