Marker text for the English Pole Barn:
THE FOCAL POINT OF DAILY LIFE
The English Pole Barn is an early example of a settler's outbuilding in 1890. This barn was a focal point of daily life on an early Florida homestead. Construction for structures like this was usually of pole sapling, supported by large logs. The roof also would be built using palm fronds or cedar shakes.
TYPICAL BARN USAGE
The Pole Barn was moved onto the park in 1994 and was the last of the historic buildings to arrive. The barn was used as a work center for storing farm implements and tools, and to provide both shade from the sun and protection for the farm animals. Th cribs were used to store crops and included grains, peas, corn and a variety of seeds. The loft was used to store hay to feed the animals.
DONATIONS TO PARK
The English Pole Barn was donated to Homeland Heritage Park by Irma and Jack English. The log cabin and the pole barn are treated as companion pieces, as they were built around the same period and both belonged to the English family.
