"The bridge crosses Jon Smørs gate ( National Road 555 ) and has a span of 17 meters. Smørsbroen is a concrete arch bridge , with two lanes , sidewalks on both sides and parking spaces on one side. Previously, the tram in Bergen also ran over Smørsbroen.
The bridge was opened in 1923 and renovated in 1990/91 . It is special because it has facades in two different styles. The northeastern facade is in the neo-Gothic style , while the southwestern facade is in the functionalist style . During the renovation in 1991 , the bridge was decorated by the artist Arne Rygvold . Like the street under the bridge, Smørsbroen is named after knight and councilor Jon Svalesson Smør (c. 1420 - 83 ).
Smørsbroen is proposed for protection in the National Protection Plan for Roads, Bridges and Road-Related Cultural Heritage .
In 2020, it was reported that the bridge is named "Smørs bru" on various maps. When contacted, the Norwegian Mapping Authority replied that it was Bergen Municipality that had changed the name, which could not be reversed without notification from the municipality. However, Smørsbroen is a county municipal facility, and thus the county has the decision-making authority for the name. At the same time, the bridge is in the middle of a reorganization, where responsibility for roads is transferred from the Norwegian Public Roads Administration to the counties . However, the recommended spelling is Smørsbroen, unanimously adopted by the City Name Service in Western Norway and Bergen Municipality. "
