The South Mountain Scenic Overlook is at a road side pull out with room for sevearl cars; there are also a few shelters here, and even a rock shop with an espresso bar. Historical Markers on site describe the construction of the road cut through the Devils Backbone, which exposes upper Fayetteville Shale, and overlying lower Pitkin Limestone that was deposited in a shallow sea covering the southern Ozark region as the Mississippian Geological Period ended. This history is revealed as visitors inspect the roadside cut on the east side of the highway. An Earth Cache at this location encourages visitors to examine the cliffs and enhance their knowledge of geologic history. An orientation table here identifies features visible to the west and northwest.
