[DE] "Die Scaligerburg (italienisch Castello Scaligero) in Sirmione ist eine Wasserburg in der gleichnamigen italienischen Gemeinde am Südufer des Gardasees in der Provinz Brescia. Sie ist eine der außergewöhnlichsten militärarchitektonischen Anlagen des 14. Jahrhunderts in Italien, die relativ unverändert erhalten geblieben ist.
Die Burg liegt auf der etwa vier Kilometer in den Gardasee ragenden Halbinsel von Sirmione an einer leicht zu verteidigenden Stelle. Sie wurde an einer etwas mehr als 200 m breiten Stelle an der Ostseite der Halbinsel errichtet und liegt, vom Südufer des Sees kommend, am Beginn des historischen Ortskerns von Sirmione. Die Lage am Ortsrand wurde dabei bewusst gewählt und ist Charakteristikum für Burgen, die unter den verschiedenen Signorie in Ober- und Mittelitalien im 14. Jahrhundert errichtet wurden. Die Randlage unterstreicht das Misstrauen des herrschenden Adels vor dem einfachen Volk, so dass der Burg in Sirmione die doppelte Aufgabe zukam, ihre Burgherrn vor Angriffen von außen und zugleich vor Übergriffen aus der Bevölkerung zu schützen."

[EN] “The Scaligero Castle (Castello Scaligero in Italian) in Sirmione is a moated castle in the Italian municipality of the same name on the southern shore of Lake Garda in the province of Brescia. It is one of the most extraordinary military architectural complexes of the 14th century in Italy that has been preserved relatively unchanged.
The castle is located on the Sirmione peninsula, which juts out about four kilometers into Lake Garda, in an easily defensible position. It was built at a point just over 200 meters wide on the eastern side of the peninsula and, coming from the southern shore of the lake, lies at the beginning of the historic center of Sirmione. The location on the edge of the town was deliberately chosen and is characteristic of castles built under the various signorie in Upper and Central Italy in the 14th century. The peripheral location underlines the mistrust of the ruling nobility towards the common people, so that the castle in Sirmione had the dual task of protecting its lords from attacks from outside and at the same time from attacks from the population.”
