Sirwan opened in 1965, not far from the historical and functional center of Erbil, the Citadel, considered by UNESCO a World Heritage Site.

Back in the days there were four cinemas in Erbil: The first cinema was Salah Haddin Cinema, which was built in 1947, followed by Hamra, Sirwan and Crystal.

Sirwan was closed in 1981, and about that time all the vintage movie theaters were gone, replaced by modern, smaller, cinemas. The others were demolished. Sirwan is the only one still standing, although abandoned. In the ground floor some shops are operating.
