The present Sherman County Courthouse, a Beaux Arts style building, occupies a typical courthouse square in downtown Loup City. It replaced an 1878 structure. In 1919 residents passed a measure to levy a special tax to fund the construction of a new courthouse. Work began when John Ohlsen, a local contractor, was given the contract on April 5, 1920. During construction, county offices occupied store buildings, and rooms in the county jail. The new building was dedicated October 8, 1921 with 4000 people in attendance.
It was placed on the National Historical Register in 1990.
