La Portada Principal, situada a los pies de la iglesia en el lado occidental, fue mandada construir en 1619 por el obispo Pedro Fernández Zorrilla y el cabildo. Puerta de madera, con dos aperturas más pequeñas para su facilidad de uso, es curioso ver que las pequeñas puertas han sido contrachapadas y no menos curioso los remaches utilizados en su cosido, de hierro con cabeza rectangular.
"Las portadas se caracterizan por la sencillez y severidad de todo el conjunto catedralicio, no presentado los caracteres góticos que le serían propios, pues las primitivas portadas del templo fueron reformadas en distintas épocas adaptándolas a los nuevos gustos. En la actualidad se conservan tres, una central o principal y dos laterales.

La Portada Principal, situada a los pies de la iglesia en el lado occidental, fue mandada construir en 1619 por el obispo Pedro Fernández Zorrilla y el cabildo.
La portada tiene dos cuerpos: el bajo presenta un vano de acceso adintelado enmarcado por pares de columnas jónicas levantadas sobre podiums que soportan un arquitraba quebrado, el alto presenta una hornacina central y dos cartelas rematadas todas por frontones triangulares. En la hornacina fue mandada colocar, en 1692, por el obispo Marín de Rodezno, la actual escultura en piedra de caracteres barrocos de San Juan Bautista. Las cartelas tienen en bajo relieve sendos escudos, uno episcopal y otro del cabildo. La fachada fue concluida definitivamente con su aspecto actual en 1862, fecha en la que se construye la escalinata. Gracias al programa de restauración de catedrales esta fachada fue restaurada en 1994".

The Main Entrance, located at the foot of the church on the western side, was commissioned in 1619 by Bishop Pedro Fernández Zorrilla and the chapter. It's a wooden door with two smaller openings for ease of use. It's interesting to see that the small doors are made of plywood, and no less interesting are the iron rivets with rectangular heads used in their stitching.
"The portals are characterized by the simplicity and severity of the entire cathedral complex, lacking the Gothic characteristics that would have been characteristic of it, as the original portals of the temple were renovated at different times, adapting them to new tastes. Three are currently preserved: a central or main one and two on the sides.
The Main Door or Door of Saint John
The Main Door, located at the foot of the church on the western side, was commissioned in 1619 by Bishop Pedro Fernández Zorrilla and the chapter.
The portal has two sections: the lower one has a lintelled access opening framed by pairs of Ionic columns raised on podiums supporting a broken architrave; the upper one has a central niche and two cartouches, all topped by triangular pediments. In the niche, the current stone sculpture of Saint John the Baptist with Baroque features was commissioned by Bishop Marín de Rodezno in 1692. The cartouches bear bas-relief coats of arms, one episcopal and the other of the chapter. The façade was finally completed in its current appearance in 1862, the year in which the staircase was built. Thanks to the cathedral restoration program, this façade was restored in 1994."
