In 1849, three Americans founded a newspaper in Panama called the Star & Herald. For the next 140 years, it kept the English-speaking folks of Panama informed. A number of other newspapers came and went during that period often blowing out on the same political wind which blew them in. In 1853, the Star & Herald started placing a Spanish-language insert into the paper called La Estrella. Eventually, La Estrella became a separate publication altogether.
The Star & Herald ceased publication in 1987, but La Estrella is still going strong. It celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2003 with, among other things, the issue of a commemorative postage stamp. The stamp shows the building in the Casco Viejo section of Panama City that was home to both the Star & Herald and La Estrella for many years. Today, that building has been converted into a hotel and apartments.
