The summit of Mount Washington is marked by both an elevation sign and a National Geodetic Survey Benchmark Disk. Right by these two "official" markers is a five-foot cairn of loose stone, created one rock at a time by those who reached the summit of Mount Washington. The creation of such "summit cairns" is sometimes frowned upon by the officials, but they apparently have let this one stand.
