The 14th Indiana was part of the Union assault on Confederate positions along the Sunken Road, later to be known as Bloody Lane because of the extremely heavy casualties sustained by both sides here. This regiment suffered 30 fatalities in addition to another 150 who were wounded out of the 320 who were engaged here.
The monument is a simple granite block with a metal plate on the top with the inscription on it. It sits right next to the rail fence under some trees along the Sunken Road.
