"Apesar de que el escudo de Melide no está aprobado por la Xunta ni por el Gobierno central, se trata de un blasón que cumple escrupulosamente con la norma heráldica. Así lo consideran los expertos en la materia. También destacan el carácter pontificio de este escudo, según se recoge en Galicia. Heráldica, xenealoxía e nobiliaria (Hércules Ediciones). En la descripción, se hace alusión a la tiara pontificia que se ve en el centro de este distintivo municipal, «que é unha mitra ou bonete ovoide de prata, enfilado de tres coroas ducais de ouro [...] con dúas ínfulas de prata pendentes, [...] e sementadas de cruces de sable». Según los expertos, esta tiara pontificia representa a San Pedro, patrón de esta localidad, y hace referencia al hecho de que está considerado el primer papa de Roma, fundador de la primera iglesia.
Las tres estrellas que aparecen en la parte inferior del escudo simbolizan la importancia que el Camino de Santiago tiene en esta localidad, al convergir dos importantes rutas xacobeas, el Camino Primitivo y el Francés, que se funden en este municipio hasta llegar a Santiago de Compostela: «Tiña Melide un hospital, que estaba ao lado do mosteiro de Sancti Spiritus (hoxe igrexa parroquia), destinado á acollida de pobres e peregrinos». Aunque hay algunos autores y expertos heráldicos que también vinculan las estrellas al número de veces que Pedro negó a Jesús, tal y como lo había anunciado en la Última Cena."
