Built between 1894 and 1907, the Nuestra Señora de La Merced Church replaced an earlier structure that was destroyed by an earthquake in 1888. Though replacing the former Merced church, it was not built in the same location, in fact, it is no longer in the Merced neighborhood of San José. It was designed by architect Jaime Carranza in a kind of German Gothic style. Recognized as part of the cultural and architectural heritage of Costa Rica in 1996, it underwent restoration in 2002.
Mercy Church, as it is commonly called, was one of twenty churches from all across the country to appear on a set of air mail postage stamps issued in 1967. Some of these were reprinted in different colors in 1973.
