The Mercer County Courthouse, Walker and Main Sts., of smooth Indiana limestone in neo-classic style, has interior walls of paneled black walnut. On the north and the south faqade are carved stone friezes depicting the various occupations and industries of the county. The building is the fifth on the site. The first small brick structure, erected in 1839 when the county was formed, had to be replaced almost immediately because of faulty construction. The second was burned by Confederates; the third was burned soon after completion, presumably by someone awaiting trial; the fourth was replaced in 1931 with the present structure.--West Virginia, A Guide to the Mountain State 1941
This is an interesting stop on the waymark questers dream list. There are markers and memorials, a museum, a bell, and even a tank on the block. Something for everyone.
