This mosque is grandiose in the outside but it's in the inside that lies its magic: the decoration of the domes.

This Sunni mosque is extremely beautiful, specially inside, where the Turkish artists did their best to provide Erbil's largest mosque with magic paints. Accordingly to its guardian, there were teams with dozens of artists working on the decoration of the ceilings and domes.
Despite its charm, Jalil Khayat Mosque is a new mosque, finished in 2007 by the sons of Jalil Khayat who died in 2005, before its gift to the city was completed.

"(...) it is the largest mosque in the city of Erbil. The mosque was begun by Jalil Khayat, who later died in 2005, and it was completed in 2007 by his sons in memory of their father.
The mosque's style resembles the Mosque of Muhammad Ali in Cairo and the Blue mosque in Istanbul. It has been cited as one of the most beautiful mosque interiors. Jalil Khayat's construction company states that "The mosque building relies on Islamic architecture and Abbasid Architecture except the domes, which are of Ottoman Architecture. The height of the main dome is 48 metres (157 ft), and the diameter is 20 metres (66 ft), with four half domes and twelve quarter domes surrounding it. The mosque is 15,000 square metres (160,000 sq ft) and holds about 1,500 to 2,000 people."
