Herman Davis (January 3, 1888 – January 5, 1923) was a decorated American sniper of World War I. He was a United States Infantry Private Company I, 113th Infantry Regiment, 29th Division. Born here in Manila, he was drafted into the Army in March 1918. On October 10, 1918, he achieved distinction by killing four German machine gunners, using a standard-issue 1903 Springfield with open sights, near Verdun during the Meuse-Argonne Offensive. This was noted by General John Pershing, who named Davis the 4th most important hero of the conflict, and Davis received multiple medals and awards from the U.S. and French government. Tragically, Davis died only four years after his discharge, possibly due to complications from exposure to poison gas.
This memorial is the centerpiece of the (very small) Herman Davis State Park, which is but one acre in size. The original white marble statue of Davis was erected here in 1925, and the site became a State Park in 1953. The Arkansas Department of Parks and Tourism is responsible for its maintenance. The original statue was destroyed by vandals in 1967 and was replaced by the current statue. While there are no amenities or Visitors Center here, there is a stamp (imbedded in the sign) so that you can mark this one in your State Park Passport book.
