This impressive sculpture was created by Scottish artist Ronald Rae between 2002 and 2003. Carved entirely by hand from a 20-tonne block of pink Corrennie granite sourced from Aberdeenshire, the lion measures approximately 8 feet high, 17 feet long, and 7 feet wide. ?

The lion is positioned in a recumbent pose and symbolizes both strength and Scottish identity. Originally installed in Holyrood Park near the Scottish Parliament, it was relocated to St Andrew Square Gardens in 2010, where it remains on public display. The sculpture is currently on loan to Essential Edinburgh, and there is hope it will eventually be acquired permanently for the city. ? ? ?

The Lion of Scotland is situated near the Melville Monument, a 150-foot column commemorating Henry Dundas, 1st Viscount Melville, which stands at the center of St Andrew Square. ?

Additionally, in late 2022, St Andrew Square hosted part of the Born Free Forever exhibition, featuring 25 life-size bronze lions to raise awareness about wildlife conservation. While most of these sculptures were displayed in The Meadows, three were placed in St Andrew Square Gardens.
