"The Martyrial Basilica of Saint Eulalia of Merida is a religious building located in the city of Merida (Spain). It is considered a very important center for the birth of Christianity in the Iberian Peninsula.

According to researchers, it was the first Christian temple erected in Hispania after the Peace of Constantine. This church was therefore built as a martyrial basilica in memory of Eulalia of Merida. Therefore, during the early Middle Ages, it became a place of pilgrimage for those arriving from Western Europe and North Africa. At the same time, news of the martyrdom of its patron saint spread throughout the Roman Empire, and numerous churches were built with her relics, especially in Western Europe.

Built outside the walls of the ancient city, it is a beautiful structure originally erected in the 4th century, over the burial mound of Saint Eulalia and near the place where, according to tradition, the child martyr was sacrificed. A temple famous throughout Christianity for the martyrdom of Eulalia, it was soon enriched by the bishops and archbishops of Mérida.

It is the only fully medieval building found in the capital of Extremadura. Of particular note are the side chapels to the main altar and the right door of the façade, in the Romanesque style, rare in Extremadura, where Gothic influences are already beginning to be noticed."
