The Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel in San Jose can trace its roots to an educational institution established in 1816 at the very beginning of that city’s history. A major benefactor of the early school was priest and coffee plantation owner Félix Velarde Umaña who, in addition to monetary contributions, donated an altarpiece for the oratory and an image of Our Lady of Mount Carmel.

In the middle of the 19th century, a full church had replaced the school’s oratory which had been destroyed by an earthquake. The church, like the oratory, was dedicated to the Virgin of Carmen. This building was the image of austerity, but began to acquire some ornamentation around 1860. After several renovations, mainly due to earthquakes in 1910 and 1924, the church took on its current appearance.

The postage stamp was part of an extended airmail set issued in the 1960s and 70s. They featured various churches from all across the country of Costa Rica.
