Mineta is depicted standing upright with his right hand placed over his heart, suggesting a patriotic gesture, possibly during the national anthem or a pledge. He is dressed in a suit and tie, with a solemn and dignified expression on his face. The bronze statue stands in front of a white cylindrical column, highlighting his presence in the space. This statue is located in the baggage claim area of the airport, honoring Norman Y. Mineta’s legacy and contributions to public service and aviation.
Norman "Norm" Yoshio Mineta (1931–2022) was a pioneering American statesman and public servant whose career broke numerous racial and political barriers. He was the first Asian American to serve as both U.S. Secretary of Transportation and U.S. Secretary of Commerce, and the first Asian American elected mayor of a major U.S. city—San Jose, California, from 1971 to 1975. Mineta also served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1975 to 1995. A Japanese American interned during World War II at Heart Mountain, Wyoming, Mineta became a powerful advocate for civil liberties, transportation innovation, and public service. He founded the Mineta Transportation Institute and served as a business executive, Boy Scout, and Korean War veteran. His legacy is honored as a devoted son, husband, father, and a beloved leader from the Valley of Heart's Delight, now Silicon Valley.
