"Norway's main airport, Oslo Gardermoen Airport , has been renovated with a new terminal that has garnered widespread praise. The so-called New Oslo Airport was officially opened on April 27 by the Minister of Transport and Communications, Ketil Solvik-Olsen , and the CEO of Avinor, Dag Falk-Petersen.

Solvik-Olsen said that Oslo's most important airport is now also important for the entire nation: "Norway depends on a well-functioning main airport. We now have a major international airport that will be the pride of the entire nation ." This new airport received the award for "Best Airport Terminal Design" at the " Future Travel Experience Global ," an international conference of airlines and airports held recently in the United States. Oslo Airport was competing against Dallas and Zagreb Airports in the final vote.

“This is a great recognition of the work done by the entire team and proves that Norwegian architecture, engineering and design can stand on its own and at an international level,” said Gudmund Stokke , senior partner at Nordic - Office of Architecture . “The most important thing for us is to deliver what travelers expect from us every day,” added Thorgeir Landevaag , director of terminal operations at Oslo Airport.

Extensions and new facilities
The airport has grown to almost double its previous size. This expansion has provided more space for new areas, such as shops and restaurants, and has also increased passenger capacity, reaching a total of 32 million passengers per year (25 million in 2016).

The new facility covers 117,000 m2 , with a total surface area of ??265,000 m2, including new parking, restaurants, kiosks, shops, and more.

"We have invested 14 billion Norwegian kroner [almost 1.5 billion euros] in this expansion, which will make Norway more competitive ," said Falk-Petersen. "We are very proud that the expansion has been carried out without any significant impact on passengers and that Oslo Airport has been named Europe's most punctual airport three times during this period," she added.

Environmentally friendly
Environmental considerations and emissions were key elements in the planning and construction process, with the new buildings receiving excellent environmental certification . It is the greenest terminal at the airport, with a 300-meter skylight, curved panoramic windows, green walls, and water features throughout the facility.

Wood has been used extensively, such as in the support beams for the roof and the floor of the north pier. The ceiling of the new pier is covered with Norwegian oak panels. "We also used climate-controlled concrete , which is produced with almost half the greenhouse gas emissions of conventional concrete. Much of the metal is recycled. All materials have been chosen to create a good indoor climate for both passengers and workers," explained Landevaag.

A thermal snow storage facility has also been installed at the terminal to store snow, which will be used to cool the north pier in summer. The terminal is heated with wastewater and underfloor heating."
