WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (WGHP) — Two drivers offer the perspective from their cars after a fight at Bowman Gray Stadium in Winston-Salem on Saturday.

Drivers Zack Staley and Justin Alverson were battling for position at the end of the Street Stock race when they made contact on the cool-down lap and crashed together on the track.

Staley got out of his race car, visibly angry at Alverson, and had to be held back by track officials who were trying to keep the drivers apart. The scuffle escalated as Alverson exited his car and ran over to where officials were holding Staley at bay.

More officials and Winston-Salem police kept the drivers apart as they all wrestled around on the ground.

FOX8 Photojournalist Chris Weaver, host of Racing Report, spoke with both drivers to get their perspectives.

“During the race, the 82 car, he got spun by somebody,” Staley said. “Wasn’t me. And apparently he thought that he goes back to a position that he didn’t earn.”

Alverson said, “I slipped in his spot. I did. I slipped in his spot, and I guess he might’ve got a little sensitive about it.”

Staley said, “I tried to get my spot back and he proceeded to run me into the pit wall, tried to wreck, so that escalated into him getting passed and him chasing me down on the second lap. He decided to try to take me out.”

“I don’t just go out to junk people’s s—,” Alverson said. “I mean, we’re not there to tear up stuff. These things are too expensive.”

Staley said, “After the race, he got up beside me and was just basically throwing the finger up, and I don’t know. I’d had enough. I basically swerved over, just to say, ‘Hey man, enough of that,’ you know? And he proceeded to tear my racecar up.”

“I just threw my hand up at him like that,” Alverson said. “And he come across the nose and we went blinking red at the same time and that was it.”

Staley and Alverson finished the race 13th and 14th, respectively.
