Located just north of Moore Haven and south of Lakeport on US Highway 78 is the Fisheating Creek Wildlife Management Area (WMA). This WMA is also a listing in the Great Florida Birding and Wildlife Trail. Across from the parking area is an observation platform that overlooks the Fisheating Creek. This observation platform is ADA accessible with a ADA parking space next to it as well as ADA parking in the nearby parking and picnic area.
Fisheating Creek consists of over 18,000 acres of protected land managed by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. This area on the eastern side of the WMA besides having this observation platform also has a 4.5 mile trail to a archaeological site and historic fort location that can be accessed by hikers and bicyclists for further wildlife observation.
From the observation platform looking out across the floodplain marsh you will mostly see waterfowl including Great Egrets along with Snowy Egrets, Mottled Ducks, Wood Storks, Common and Purple Gallinules and other wading birds. Along the trail to the archaeological site you will find Crested Caracaras, Hawks, Sandhill Cranes, both Turkey and Black Vulturees, White and Glossy Ibis, Boat-tailed Grackles, Doves, Shrikes, Cardinals, Red-winged Blackbirds and Swallow-tailed Kites. Cattle Egrets are everywhere and hard to miss.
Best observation times are at dawn and dusk. The WMA is open daily sunrise to sunset.
