Muntsaratz Tower

THE OBJECT:
Torre de Muntsaratz
The tower is located in the Basque town of Abadiano on the left bank of the Zumelegui River and is one of the most outstanding Renaissance buildings in Vizcaya.
It is the home of the Muntsaratz family, an important figure in the history of Vizcaya, who have been involved in all the political and economic events in Durango (one of the seven regions of the historic territory of Biscay in the Basque Country.

THE TEXT FROM THE SIGN:
"From the end of the 10th century, the Land of Durango was part of the Kingdom of Navarre, until in 1200, when King Alfonso VII of Castile conquered the lands of Álava, Gipuzkoa and Durango from his cousin Sancho VII of Navarre. In 1212, the King of Castile granted the Land of Durango to Diego López de Haro II, Lord of Bizkaia, but even so, it was not until several centuries later that these lands were institutionally incorporated into Bizkaia. According to legend,7 in that year, a Navarrese princess named Urraka lived in the tower house of Muntsaratz, married to Pedro Ruiz of Muntsaratz. -In 1628, a treaty of union between the Lordship of Bizkaia and the Merinalda of Durango was signed, thanks to which the Durangos were able to send two representatives. They had the right to vote in the General Assembly of Gernika, but the union was not unconditional, and the Durangaldea people were never treated equally to other Biscayans. The current tower house was built by the Muntsaratz family at the beginning of the 16th century, and in 1627 it was sold to Domingo Martinez de Guisasa, who added the arcade and column gallery on the upper floor. In the chapel of Our Lady of the Entrance, there are two tombstones from the 10th century."
