“The Islote de Hilario is one of the most unique islets or kipukas of the Canary Islands and is distinguished from other islets by being covered by pyroclastic debris from the Timanfaya eruption of 1730-1736. However, the main characteristic of this IGL is the presence of thermal anomalies, registering in this area the highest thermal anomalies of all the Canary archipelago. Currently, temperatures are around 250°C at the surface, and can exceed 600°C at 13 m depth. The persistence of this thermal anomaly has favored both traditional use and tourist exploitation based on activities such as testing the temperature of surface materials, the generation of artificial geysers by introducing cold water into artificial perforations, the placement of plants in holes to observe their spontaneous combustion, the installation of ovens for their restoration, etc. At the top of Hilario islet there is a restaurant from which you get an impressive panoramic view of the Timanfaya National Park.
This LIG is mainly of volcanic interest (geothermal) and secondary for its geomorphological character. The Islote de Hilario is one of the protagonists of the visit to Timanfaya National Park. This LIG is part of the Geosite of international importance “VC007, Timanfaya National Park””.
