Its construction was led by architects Torcuato Cayón and Torcuato Benjumeda.

The exterior is in the Borrominesque style. The church's floor plan consists of three naves, the central one being taller than the two side ones. The pediment is topped by two square towers flanked by Ionic columns. The domes, both on the transept and on the towers, are finished in blue ceramic.

Cemetery
It was originally connected by a tree-lined path to the old Catholic cemetery, where a mass grave was dug for victims of reprisals. Dating from the same period and by the same architect, it formed the embryo of the future San José neighborhood.
