"The church of Santa María de la Mota is located in the grounds of the old Islamic fortress of Marchena, a walled area segregated from the city. It is the highest, hence the name of La Mota. It was built around 1356, after the granting of the Marchena lordship to Fernando Ponce de León by King Ferdinand IV of Castile on December 18, 1309.

It is the oldest church in the city, with three naves and a polygonal head in the Mudejar Gothic style. It was conceived as a chapel of the Alcázar, after its conversion into the habitual residence of the Ponce de León family and, later, the palace of the Dukes of Arcos, with which it was connected by a porticoed gallery. At the foot of the Gospel nave rises the tower, with four decreasing bodies of stone and brick, in which its checkered panels, balls and mirrors stand out, in the Mannerist tradition. The bell tower dates from 1580. In the main altarpiece there is the image of Our Lady of Goodness from the end of the 16th century.

In 1623 part of the palace, the rooms adjacent to the church, were occupied by a convent of Poor Clares that still exists, connected to it through the roofs.

In 1670, important reforms were carried out in the interior decoration, renovation of the presbytery and the main altarpiece. The plastering of the walls and the construction of the Soledad chapel are also carried out."
