At the end of Jalan Television Station is this stunning viewpoint of Darvel Bay. Gunung Silam (884 metres / 2,900 feet above sea level) offers one of the most spectacular panoramic views on Sabah’s east coast. This lesser-known gem, located near Lahad Datu, provides a stunning vantage point over Darvel Bay, a vast expanse of turquoise waters dotted with islands and coral reefs.
From the peak, the scenery is simply breathtaking. The bay stretches as far as the eye can see, its waters shimmering under the tropical sun. On clear days, you can spot Pulau Timbun Mata, Pulau Tabawan, and Pulau Silawa, islands rich in marine life and lush greenery. The intricate network of coral reefs, fish farms, and seaweed plantations paints a beautiful contrast against the deep blue sea.
Darvel Bay has long been a place of history and mystery. Once a haven for traders and pirates, the bay now attracts divers and nature lovers eager to explore its rich underwater world. Beneath the surface lie vibrant coral gardens and even shipwrecks, home to a variety of marine species, including sea turtles and—if you're lucky—a passing whale shark.
The journey up Gunung Silam is equally rewarding. The cool mountain air, dense rainforest, and occasional sightings of wildlife make the climb a refreshing escape from the coastal heat. Whether you're a nature enthusiast, a photographer, or just someone seeking a peaceful retreat, the view from Gunung Silam is sure to leave a lasting impression.
