The Curonian Spit is a piece of land that separates the Curonian Lagoon
from the Baltic Sea. One point of interest is the Parnidis Dune. There one
can find a big
sundial-calendar
that is surrounded by big stones with runes, that were copied from a 17th century calender,
that is currently stored in the National Museum of Lithuania. There are also
runes on the stele in the center of the sundial. The runes are
explained (unfortunately in Lithuanian language only)
here and
here. The sundial-calendar was created in 1995 and is the work of architect Ricardas
Krištopavicius and sculptor Klaudijus Pudymas. In 1999 a hurricane damaged
it badly, but in 2011 it was fully reconstructed.
