The Apennines are a mountain range of the Alpine belt that runs through Italy and San Marino for a thousand kilometres from north to south, through fifteen of the twenty Italian regions.

The chain between two seas forms, roughly, an arc between the city of Savona, on the Ligurian Sea, and the Strait of Messina in the Ionian Sea, the centre of the arc extending towards the Adriatic coast. The highest point is the Corno Grande, in the Gran Sasso massif in Abruzzo, with its 2,912 metres above sea level.

Campo Imperatore is a vast plateau of glacial and karst-alluvial origin at about 1800 m above sea level in the province of L’Aquila. It is located in the heart of the Gran Sasso d’Italia massif and within the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park. It hosts the Astronomical Observatory of Abruzzo and one of the most modern and well-equipped ski areas in Central Italy.
