The Johannesburg zoo is one of the treasures of Johannesburg. The zoo has over 2000 animals which include: lions, tigers, elephants, gorillas, chimpanzees, sable antelope,
polar bears and many other species.
The JHB zoo is one of the few places in the world with White Lions, they are not Albino, but white due to a recessive gene. The zoo is also the only zoo in South Africa to successfully breed Siberian Tigers. Twist, the male tiger, is the father to all the Siberian Tigers in the country.
Special night tours allow visitors to observe the habits of nocturnal creatures. There are also behind-the-scenes tours that show how the zoo operates and the work that needs to be done to ensure that it functions as a smoothly oiled machine. During holidays the zoo presents special programmes and serves as an educational facility, teaching people about wildlife and the environment.
