L. Frank Baum (the L stands for Lyman) authored over 40 novels, over 80 short stories and over 200 poems. The most successful of these were his children’s stories and anthologies and of these, the most famous by far was his 1900 children’s novel ‘The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.’ That book achieved a timeless quality when it was made into the classic 1939 movie starring Judy Garland. In addition to that original novel, Baum wrote at least 20 more books based on the Oz theme.
Baum had a lifelong infatuation with the theater which often caused financial instability for his family when he would overextend himself with failed productions. In addition to his writing, he worked as a newspaper reporter and editor, a salesman and a store proprietor at various times but was always drawn back to the stage. He was originally from upstate New York but spent significant time in Chicago and South Dakota before winding up in Los Angeles pursuing a career in film.
L. Frank Baum died in 1919 of a stroke. He’s buried in Glendale’s Forest Lawn Memorial Park.
