The equestrian statue of Peter Bodilsen is Denmark's smallest equestrian statue. The statue itself is 42 cm tall and made of bronze. It is placed on a high twisted pedestal, built of brick. This is the distinctive part of a fountain.
Peter Bodilsen (died about 1142) was a nobleman and the richest man in Zealand. Together with his mother and brothers, he donated large areas of land to the Skovklostret monastery. This is what is today called Herlufsholm.
Peter Bodilsen was also a very religious and powerful man. He demanded that priests live in celibacy, and his orders were carried out with both violence and murder.
So special that such a powerful person should be commemorated with Denmark's smallest equestrian statue.
The equestrian statue is a citizen's gift, which was erected at Næstved's 800th anniversary as a market town in 1935. It is located on Hjultorv.
