The town of Crieff is situated on the southern edge of the Highlands of Scotland in Perthshire and is located in an area of tourism. A golf club was formed herein 1891, with Old Tom Morris laying out a nine hole course on land at Lebowie. The Earl of Winchelsea hit the first shot on July 11th, with the first club competition taking place on August 22nd.
The course did not last long however and the club moved to new ground at Culcrieff, where a nine hole course was opened on April 1st 1893. This lasted until 1914 when land was acquired in the grounds of Ferntower House to the east of the town and an eighteen hole course was laid out by Robert Simpson. The course was then remodelled ten years later by James Braid and would remain this way until 1980.
In 1980 the course was revamped by John Stark, creating an eighteen hole course named the Ferntower Course, with a nine hole course named the Dornock Course giving the club now 27 holes.
The course is laid out on parkland to a par 71 at the foot of the Knock of Crieff, a wooded hill which overlooks the town to the north-east. Most holes ate generally orientated in a south-west / north-east direction with the back nine occupying the higher ground to the north. There are three par fives on the front nine, including back to back on holes five and six. Both nines have two par threes each including the opening hole which plays up the slope from the Pro's Shop. There are many mature trees on the course but it is generally wide with minimal rough. There are no water hazards on the Ferntower Course, the only pond occurring on the Dornock which is laid out alongside the A85 road that heads out of the town towards the city of Perth.
The club is situated on the eastern edge of the town on the north side of the road with a large clubhouse and a distinctive octagonal Professional's Shop next to the first tee.
