You are looking at a map of Villefranche-de-Conflent, opposite the French Gate. Like the Spanish Gate at the other end of the town, the French Gate was built in the 18th century. At the top of the gate, under the lantern, you can read the date when it was completed: 1783. For strategic and financial reasons, Vauban systematically reused the remains of existing fortifications and integrated them into his new constructions, making the most of work already done, despite a heavy increase in building density. At Villefranche-de-Conflent he demonstrates great intelligence in adapting to particularly restrictive terrain and bases himself on the medieval fortifications to strengthen the town. The design of the classic fortified site of Villefranche was carried out in 2 stages: An initial one from 1669 to 1679, when the architect Saint-Hilaire stuck to fortifying the town wall, and a second from 1679 onwards, when Vauban succeeded in imposing his views concerning the construction of the castle, Fort Libéria, begun in 1681.
