[EN] “It was inaugurated during the patron saint's fairs in September 1890 in a historicist style typical of 19th century bullrings. On that day, six bulls from Enrique Salamanca were fought by Fernando Gómez Gallo and Antonio Arana, "Jarana".

The old square and hospital for the poor and passers-by, sponsored by the Ermita del Prado, were used for its construction. Its construction was not finished until 1958, culminating with the upper boxes. The current square is made up of a large grandstand, corrals and complementary facilities.

Bullfighting lovers consider this square to be the mecca of bullfighting, sadly remembered for the death of the famous José Gómez Gallito “Joselito” on May 16, 1920, whose bronze bust can be seen in the central promenade of the Gardens.

According to the chronicles of the time, that day Queen Victoria Eugenia, wife of Alfonso XIII, who was nicknamed La Caprichosa by the people, was in the box of the bullring. Joselito used to do the so-called pole vault, a complicated art that could only be done once. On the second attempt, the bull, warned, went for the bullfighter. That afternoon, Joselito jumped in front of the queen, but she, distracted, missed the jump and sent an emissary to ask the master to repeat it. El Gallo stood in front of the box of honour and spoke to the queen: "Know madam that if I repeat it I risk my life, but I will do it for you." And he jumped, and the bull grazed him with its horn, and finished him off on the ground, and opened his abdomen. According to legend, Joselito did not die from the wound, but from the heart attack caused by seeing his guts fall to the ground. Since then, the Talavera bullring is called La Caprichosa.”
