The ancient site of Nisa was probably founded by the Arsacids in the 3rd century bC. It played a paramount role in the Parthian Empire as it became one of the most important trade towns in the region. It was razed by an earthquake shortly before Christ was born.
A visit to the ruins of Nisa is now included in pretty much every tour of Turkmenistan, so a visitor to the country will hardly miss it. It is an UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2007.
Usually the entrance fee is covered by the tour operator but those willing to take pictures of the ruins are expected to pay an extra amount by the gate, where the coordinates were taken.
It's a pleasant visit, should take around 45 min to properly explore the site.
