The Durie Hill Memorial Tower was erected in 1925 to the memory of 513 members of the Armed Services from Whanganui and District who fell in the 1914 - 1918 War. (As detailed on the plaque next to the entrance.)
The tower is built from fossilised shell rock dated at more than two million years old and stands 83m a.s.l. above the city of Whanganui. The 31.7 metre tall tower has 176 steps leading to the lookout platform on top. The stairs wind around the tower passing narrow barred windows in the thick block walls.
At the top you are rewarded with excellent views over Wanganui city, Mt Taranaki, Mt Ruapehu and the Tasman Sea.
There is a cage to prevent falling (or jumping) from the lookout. It is on the cage the love padlocks have been affixed. Many have lost their inscriptions over the years, as none appear to have been engraved - just inscribed with permanent marker.
