CAMP RANDALL, a 42-acre lot extending from University Ave. to Monroe St., between Breese Terrace and Randall Ave., was donated in 1 86 1 by the Wisconsin State Agricultural Society to the State legislature as a drill ground for Union soldiers, and named Camp Randall in honor of the war Governor, Alexander W. Randall. The camp became the center of Wisconsin military activities, and 70,000 men were quartered and trained here. After the war, the property became the State Fairgrounds, but in 1893 it was acquired by the university as an athletic field. In 1911 a section of the land was set aside as the Camp Randall Memorial Park, and a Memorial Arch, 36 feet high and 36 feet wide, completed in 1912, was dedicated to the Civil War soldiers. During the World War, the camp was again used as a drill ground for the soldiers, many of them university students.-Wisconsin: A Guide to the Badger State 1941

Walking through the memorial park is a trip into the past. There are several memorials and historical markers. A cannon. The arch is very impressive. Trying to imagine the students from the University drilling to become soldiers in the U.S. Civil War while looking at the backdrop of Camp Randall Stadium - home of the Big 10 football Wisconsin Badgers.
