In 2000 Gordon and Ann Pilone purchased the very wet farmlnd adjacent to their home within Pohangina Village.
Historically the swampy land continuously challenged owners attempting to drain it for pasture development. The idea to reverse this process was initiated when the title to the land purchases was placed in a charitable trust. 'Pohangina Wetlands Development' was established to form wetland habitats by creating ponds and restoring native grasses, bush, and trees.
Pohangina Wetlands was created primarily to enhance habitat for wildlife, but being within Pohangina Village, the founders also intended this treasure always be enjoyed and open to walkers - local and outside visitors - free of charge.
