The Monumental Lighthouse of La Serena is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the area. The sign on the lighthouse wall reads (google translation): "The Lighthouse was built between 1950 by the Chilean Navy within the framework of the Serena Plan carried out by President Gabriel Gonzalez Videla. The Monumental Lighthouse, by its location and monumental character, constitutes an element of social identity, which has become a national tourist landmark inextricably integrated into the image of the city. Its aesthetic and architectural value is defined by its proportion, adapted to the architectural typology of a lighthouse, typical of the Serena Plan."
