Construction of the limestone Chicago, Burlington, & Quincy Roundhouse and Locomotive Shop was begun in 1856 initially with twenty-two stalls. In 1859 eight additional stalls were added and in 1864 the final ten stalls were built, completing the circle. Over the years addition shops were added around the roundhouse as the Aurora shop expanded its capacity. The Aurora shops built locomotives along with other rolling stock. With the decline of rail operations in the 1960's the Aurora shops cut back production and finally closed in 1974. The roundhouse remained vacant and deteriorating for several years. In 1995 a development group including NFL Hall of Famer Walter Payton, began converting the roundhouse into a restaurant and entertainment facility which opened in 1996.
