The Historic Center of Salvador de Bahia, also known as the Pelourinho, is extremely rich in historical monuments dating from the 17th through the 19th centuries.
1. Elevador Lacerda: S 12° 58.465 W 38° 30.774
Built in the late 19th century, this elevator in Salvador connects the Cidade Baixa (the lower city on the coast) to the Cidade Alta (the old city above). It is 72 meters high and has two towers: one which crosses the Ladeira da Montanha and another, more visible, which goes to the level of the Cidade Baixa. (Hours: 5:00 am to 12:00 am)
2. Rio Branco Palace: S 12° 58.483 W 38° 30.777
This former seat of the state government is one of the oldest palaces in Brazil, dating back to 1549. It is located in the historic center of Salvador, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Today it houses the Pedro Calmon Foundation and the Memorial of the Governors.
3. Cathedral Basilica of Salvador: S 12° 58.367 W 38° 30.618
Also named Primatial Cathedral Basilica of the Transfiguration of the Lord, the cathedral is the seat of the Archbishop of the city of Salvador. The 30 restored reliquary busts constitute today, with the two altars, the most important collection of Brazilian sacred art from the end of the 16th century. The temple also has a valuable collection, consisting of paintings by several 17th century authors, rosewood furniture and various sacred objects in gold and silver. The brilliance of the 13 golden altars leaves visitors speechless. No less than 50,000 gold leaves, 5,000 silver leaves, and lots and lots of labor were used.
4. Largo do Pelourinho: S 12° 58.287 W 38° 30.501
Largo do Pelourinho is also known as Praça José de Alencar with its pastel colored buildings from the 17th and 18th centuries. In 1996, it was the setting for the music video They Don't Care About Us, by American singer Michael Jackson.
5. Church da Ordem Terceira de São Francisco: S 12° 58.461 W 38° 30.530
The Church of the Third Order of Saint Francis is an 18th-century Roman Catholic church located in Salvador. The church was built as an annex to the Church and Convent of São Francisco. It is known for its characteristic Plateresque-style façade, a unique example in Brazil. The writer Jorge Amado called the façade of the Church of the Third Order "magnificent".
