La actual ciudad de San Francisco de Campeche fue fundada el 4 de octubre de 1540 por los españoles que eran comandados por Francisco de Montejo “El Mozo”. Al momento de su fundación, recibió el nombre de Villa de San Francisco de Campeche, siendo la primera villa hispana en ser fundada en la península de Yucatán.
Gracias a la fusión de las dos culturas, la maya y la española, Campeche posee una vasta riqueza cultural, recursos naturales inigualables y un pasado prehispánico importante, siendo heredero de los majestuosos vestigios mayas. Ese vasto patrimonio cultural tangible e intangible, ha permeado para que Campeche sea musa de inspiración de diversos artistas al momento de crear sus obras.
Uno de esos artistas que se inspiró en la herencia milenaria y del encanto del pasado fue Ernesto Tamay Segovia, quien resultó ganador del certamen para el diseño de la Plaza 4 de Octubre. El concurso fue convocado por el gobernador Abelardo Carrillo Zavala (1985-1991), en alusión al 450 aniversario de la fundación de Campeche.
La obra está compuesta por tres esculturas elaboradas en bronce. Una de ellas representa a un cacique maya sentado y mide una altura de dos metros; las otras dos piezas representan a un fraile sosteniendo una cruz en posición evangelizadora (bautismo) y a un español con armadura, midiendo ambas una altura de dos metros con cuarenta centímetros. Cada una de las piezas tiene un peso aproximado de 700 u 800 kilogramos.
Para la realización de la obra se destinó un monto de 882 millones de pesos y se erigió en un área de cuatrocientos metros. El monumento en su conjunto representa el encuentro entre las dos culturas, esa fusión entre la civilización prehispánica con una cultura europea. Su inauguración se llevó a cabo el 4 de octubre de 1990.
La Plaza 4 de Octubre se encuentra ubicada sobre el malecón de la ciudad, en la avenida Pedro Sainz de Baranda y frente al parque conocido popularmente como Novia del Mar, hoy en día denominado Parque Campeche. El monumento es un referente, desde el día de su inauguración, para la conmemoración del día de la fundación de Campeche, pues ahí diversas autoridades de los tres rangos de nivel (federal, estatal y municipal) se reúnen para montar guardia de honor en memoria a dicho acontecimiento.
